Last Minute Prepping: What to do during the meltdown

//
//

So we all think about it, what will we do when the meltdown happens?

Now when I say that I don’t necessarily mean a pandemic flu hitting and everyone is rushing to get stuff to lock themselves in for 3 months, It could be anything from a Hurricane to that less likely but still possibly event.

To make things more convenient for my writing I will focus on say “A” meltdown and not “THEY” meltdown, lets take the economic paradigm shift that is coming sooner or later as a framework.

Fade to Black…

Camera opens on a grey sky, and pans to a Television, the newscaster is talking with a round table of financial “experts” who all talk about why the Dow has just took a 4000 point slide and the Government circuit breakers automatically halted trading at 2:25pm NYST

Side note:

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has 3 circuit breaker levels (as of Feb 2013 these are correct)

  • Level 1- 10% drop (as of Q1 2013, 1300 points)
  • Level 2- 20% drop (as of Q1 2013, 2650 points)
  • Level 3- 30% drop (as of Q1 2013, 3950 points)

If it is before 3:25 pm NYST a Level 1 or 2 will halt all trading for 15 minutes, after 3:25 it will not halt trading, and any level 3 drop will halt trading for the day.

Anyways back to my story…

Now people are starting to freak out, talk of the Great Depression is on everyone’s lips, mentions of Black Friday, worries about whats in the bank, things go bad quickly.

Who knows what will happen tomorrow?  Will this be the beginning of a swift end or just a major bump before a leveling off and another “recovery”

Speaking to you as preppers at whatever level you are, you have at least some things put away and are better off than 99% of the people you see on the street, you start to think of your Bug in/Bug out plans and wonder what to do next

Well this is what you need to do and what to consider for your next move.

WHAT ARE MY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES?

You should have a pretty good idea what you have in your preps already, where you are in your food preps, self defense, power, etc.

The reason I am writing this is so IF…IF this happens in this way you wont have to be thinking this out like we are right now.

You should be constantly keeping tabs on what you have and where you want to improve on next, this way you know…”OK I’m good with food, but I’m short on some ammo for my personal defense weapons…” or “I need to have more gas for the generator and the car…”

Gas

Lets say for instance you needed gas, when you first saw all the troubles, I would take your vehicle (and if you have a spouse, significant other, family, etc. have them come in their car as well) go and head to the nearest store that carries gas cans, buy as many as you can and head to the gas station.

People might already be freaking out, but if you are on this early on you can probably skip the long lines and maybe only wait for a few people.

Fill up your car first then as many gas cans as you can before you the limit on your card hits, then bring in the next car in your family convoy and do the same, perhaps send the other family member back home and you get back in line to fill up more, that is up to you and depends on how many you bought.

Hostility

This applies to all places you may go, but lets take the gas station for instance.

If you are holding up the line filling up your gas cans and some jackass who’s all riled up in his corvette worried that things are crashing down and all his money is tied up in expensive crap that isnt going to help him any longer starts to give you grief, DON’T RESPOND.  Don’t try to argue just (in my opinion) just finish filling the can you are, load up and go.

There’s no need to get into a fistfight in public over gas, and if you end up badly injured you are now in worst shape than if you hadn’t gotten the gas (or food, etc) in the first place.

Stay calm, don’t overreact, just do what you came to do and avoid confrontation.  Now if you feel you are in danger, respond accordingly, don’t escalate, but take measures appropriate to respond to the hostile actions of the other person.  This is all situation dependent and remember….you are not in mad max scenario yet, nor you probably will never be, so overreacting and pulling a gun or something could get you locked up or worse, and once again you are in a worse situation than when you went there.

Food

Now even if you have years worth of food and all your preps are pretty well covered it would still behoove you to maybe grab a little more.  This is all situation dependent and you will have to gauge the risk vs reward on your own, depending on what things look like TO YOU

In the great book “How to Survive the End of the World as we Know it” by J.W. Rawles he has some sound advice in regards to this exact situation.

When the panic starts to hit, you will still probably be able to safely go to stores, people may be on edge and panicking, however things wont go to Book Of Eli in the blink of an eye.  You’re best bet is to go to a place like Costco or Sam’s Club.  Grab one of their large flat bottom carts and go to the strategic areas first.

Hit up the aisles with the food/misc products you need or want the most of, this could be…

  • 50 lb bags of Rice
  • Pancake Mix
  • 25 lb bags of Sugar/Salt
  • Honey
  • Olive Oil/Cooking oils
  • Batteries (car and or/AA/AAA/D, etc)
  • Clothing
  • All of the above

With the Flat Bottom carts you can stack A CRAP TON of stuff.  Food may be a priority so hit those up first then move to batteries/clothing.   Stay away from fresh foods of course unless you are planning on smoking/salting/etc. it.  in this situation non-perishable is the key.

This is all situation dependent if people are truly freaking out and it seems dangerous, don’t go.  The point of Preparedness and being a prepper is to do the things that increase your survivability, not decrease it.

WHAT IF ALL THE ‘GOOD STUFF’ IS GONE?

What do you do if you are johnny come lately and the stores have already been picked over, no bags of rice, no cans of chili, etc.

Now this is…once again…situation dependent, if its a hurricane, than i wouldn’t necessarily worry about doing all of the stuff that will be mentioned, this is more geared towards an event that you think might be signalling the “A” meltdown that just might be “THEY” meltdown.

Look for items that would still have barter value, or be of use for self sufficiency, but haven’t been picked over.

These could be…

  • Canning Materials
  • Cheese Cloth
  • Crisco jars (remember…candles!!!)
  • Rain Gear
  • Mosquito repellant
  • Camping supplies
  • Clothing
  • Salt Licks for Deer can be consumed by people
  • Exotic Ammunition for weapons you don’t own  (30-30, 45-70, 7mm Mauser, etc.)
  • Shampoo, Soap, Facial Cleansers
  • Feminine Hygiene Products (even if you are NOT a woman and have none in the home, excellent bartering)
  • Baby Diapers, Rash Creams (same reason as above)
  • Shoes/Boots (good working kind not flashy basketball shoes unless that’s all that is left)
  • Some food may be left like beets/etc. that no one likes.  Grab it, beets make a better meal than a empty plate.
  • First Aid Supplies, gauze, Tylenol, band aids, etc.
  • Bleach
  • Musical Birthday cards for improvised Security
  • Hand Warmers (can be used for sealing buckets of food)
  • Yeast/Bread Making supplies
  • Anything that can store and be of use

If you are at one of the big box hardware stores look for

  • Nails/Screws
  • Hand Tools (hammers, screwdrivers,etc)
  • Gardening supplies
  • Shovels/Picks/Axes
  • Food Grade Buckets (Lowes has food grade buckets now)
  • Gamma Seal Lids (Home Depot often has these)
  • Spray Paint (Drab Colors)
  • Bleach
  • Pool Shock, I wrote a post about this so read more here
  • Batteries (Try to get Low Discharge Rechargeables like ENELOOP)
  • Small battery Motion Detectors
  • Small Door/Window Alarms
  • Hand Warmers (can be used for sealing buckets of food)

There are also a multitude of other places you can go to at the last minute.

  • Bakeries.  Often they sell whole grain by the pound, the one near me sells hard red winter wheat (whole) for a Dollar a pound, often you have to bring your own buckets, but this is a good reason to have extras beyond what is filled in your long term storage preps.
  • Small military supply stores for a few extra pieces of gear
  • Gun Shops, pick over whats left if anything
  • Restaurant Supply stores are often overlooked, but they will have bags of Flour, Sugar, Salt, Buckets of butter, Honey, etc.
  • Pet Shops, they may not be the ideal rabbits, etc. but you can get a breeding pair to keep indoors and breed out some babies to eat later.
  • Dollar Stores.  They may have some canned goods and other trinkets of use left
  • Thrift Shops.  Often can have cheap extra clothing for different seasons
  • Supermarkets.  Now this was already covered but if they have a bakery section you might be able to finagle some buckets of oil, butter, flour, etc from the manager for a ‘side deal’
  • Automotive.  Going to the local Autozone or O’Reilly’s may be of some use to grab those extra belts for your engine, tires and other things that more often break.  Look at motor oil, Coolant and Fuel/Oil Filters as well.
  • Baby’s R Us/Boutique shops.  Same reason as getting diapers/baby stuff at the super market. Even if you don’t have a child it could be used as barter or charity depending on your situation/good will.  Also look at the more expensive re-usable cloth diapers, those could be gold for a parent, you can use them, wash them re-use them.
  • McDonald’s/Fast Food. You may be able to pay under the table to the manager to make off with some cooking oils and anything else of use like tubs of mayo, boxes of ketchup packets, etc.
  • Restaurants.  Same thing as fast food and Bakeries, you may be able to buy non-perishable buckets of oils, flour, butter, yeast, anything.
  • Book Stores.  Look for books on self sufficiency that you HAVE read and liked (to pass on) or on subjects you think you will need to learn NOW, but haven’t yet.

How to Hide from Drones and Facial Recognition

drones tv//
//

I read an article on WIRED that talked to a gentleman who has started designing a line of clothing to help protect yourself and help to give you more privacy in a world quickly becoming dominated by Drones and other intrusive practices.

Originally he designed something called the OFF POCKET (which is in pre-launch phase, you can sign up to be notified when it is available) which basically KILLS all incoming and outgoing signals for your phone.  If you aren’t aware of this Smart phones especially have the ugly side of being able to track your every movement, and there was a big hullabaloo about Apple doing this very thing!

He has since spun off into new endeavours to help you gain more privacy in a world where you are losing it day by day.

STEALTH WEAR

Mr. Adam Harvey has designed a few different prototypes

One being the THERMAL VISOR

Thermal-Visor

This disguises your face from above and doesn’t draw attention to the fact you are trying to hide it, as well as the UAV silhouette on the t-shirt is more to poke fun!

THE THERMAL HOODY

Thermal-proof-Hoodie-hiding from drones

The bare stomach is to show contrast between your skin under pants, bare skin and then the thermal hoodie and its effectiveness, combined with a face mask and other clothing this could damn near make you invisible from a cursory and possibly even a detailed search of an area.

THERMAL SCARF

Anti-Drone-Scarf hiding from drones

Mr. Harvey said the scarf was modeled  after “The Rationale behind the hijab (the headscarf women wear in muslim countries)…the veil that separates man or the world from God, replacing God with drone.”

Facial NON RECOGNITION

on ahprojects.com a persons Master Thesis in Telecommunications programs at NYU came up with CV DAZZLE which is an interface that takes the form of makeup and hair styling (and other modifications) to Hide your face from facial recognition both from cameras and from data mining of photos on the net.

Dazzle Camo was originally designed to break up the gestalt image of warships to make it harder to discern their “directionality, size and orientation”, the goal of this program is to do the same, but for your face!

HERE ARE SOME TEST PATTERNS and some photos of people “Done Up” to avoid Facial detection.

Facial-Recognition-Patterns

confusing facial recognition

man hiding facial detection

Now i realize the last one is pretty far out there, and i wouldn’t do that to my public image!  However it is something to think about (maybe that’s why futuristic movie people have such messed up hairstyles!!!)

Insurgent Tactics…

Now this is a sticky area, i grappled with this whether not to reproduce this “education” since it came from such a disgusting group, however the tactics are true, and regardless of the groups  lack of morality, the tactics are true.

AP produced this paper on insurgent tactics to defeat drones, which i think is useful in this instance….The following is quoted and you can read the whole document through the PDF at the end.

  1. It is possible to know the intention and the mission of the drone by using the Russian made
“sky grabber” device to infiltrate the drone’s waves and the frequencies. The device
is available in the market for $2,595 and the one who operates it should be a computer know-
    how.
  2. Using devices that broadcast frequencies or pack of frequencies to disconnect the
contacts and confuse the frequencies used to control the drone. The Mujahideen have had
successful experiments using the Russian-made “Racal.”
  3. Spreading the reflective pieces of glass on a car or on the roof of the building.
  4. Placing a group of skilled snipers to hunt the drone, especially the reconnaissance
ones because they fly low, about six kilometers or less.
  5. Jamming of and confusing of electronic communication using the ordinary water-lifting
dynamo fitted with a 30-meter copper pole.
  6. Jamming of and confusing of electronic communication using old equipment and
keeping them 24-hour running because of their strong frequencies and it is possible using
simple ideas of deception of equipment to attract the electronic waves devices similar to
that used by the Yugoslav army when they used the microwave (oven) in attracting and
confusing the NATO missiles fitted with electromagnetic searching devices.
  7. Using general confusion methods and not to use permanent headquarters.
  8. Discovering the presence of a drone through well-placed reconnaissance networks and
to warn all the formations to halt any movement in the area.
  9. To hide from being directly or indirectly spotted, especially at night.
  10. To hide under thick trees because they are the best cover against the planes.
  11. To stay in places unlit by the sun such as the shadows of the buildings or the trees.
  12. Maintain complete silence of all wireless contacts.
  13. Disembark of vehicles and keep away from them especially when being chased or
    during combat.
  14. To deceive the drone by entering places of multiple entrances and exits.
  15. Using underground shelters because the missiles fired by these planes are usually of
the fragmented anti-personnel and not anti-buildings type.
  16. To avoid gathering in open areas and in urgent cases, use building of multiple doors
    or exits.
  17. Forming anti-spies groups to look for spies and agents.
  18. Formation of fake gatherings such as using dolls and statutes to be placed outside
false ditches to mislead the enemy.
  19. When discovering that a drone is after a car, leave the car immediately and everyone
should go in different direction because the planes are unable to get after everyone.
  20. Using natural barricades like forests and caves when there is an urgent need for
    training or gathering.
  21. In frequently targeted areas, use smoke as cover by burning tires.
  22. As for the leaders or those sought after, they should not use communications
equipment because the enemy usually keeps a voice tag through which they can identify
the speaking person and then locate him.

This was all reported open source in the AP news you can read the whole file below

Domestic Drones Countermeasures LLC

www.domesticdronecountermeasures.com

This company blipped on my radar recently.  They are a Company out of Oregon City, Oregon that (from their site)

“Develops and Manufactures Countermeasure Hardware Solutions and related Peripheral systems and Software.”

There is little to no information on EXACTLY what these countermeasures are other than that they are…

“Multi-layer Drone Shields and Countermeasure Domes for Large Area, small area, open area, mobile, fixed or built in to structures”

So I’m guessing some sort of dome to put over an area that blocks Drones from looking in, and a interview with a RT (Russia Today) stated that this is not weaponry and that…

“Drones will not fall from the sky, but they will be unable to complete their missions,”

I am working to get an interview with someone from the company on the podcast or at least a interview one on one that I can relate to you all in a later podcast.

Body Armor for Preppers: Should you?

ciras
//
//

Often on the Prepper Boards, Forums, etc. in the more machismo world of guns and fighting off the Mongolian Hordes come TEOTWAWKI the subject of Body Armor always comes up, quickly after is a discussion of what to get, where to buy it, etc.

However I want to broach the subject of SHOULD YOU even buy it?

What is Body Armor/PPE

Now a quick rundown of Body armor is needed.

There are three components to Body Armor

The Vest:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These can vary from just a cloth shell to one replete with pouches and MOLLE straps to put various other pouches onto

The Inserts:

ballistic insert

These are the actual kevlar weave pieces that go inside the “shell” and provide the ballistic protection.  These can be separate pieces that can be removed or sometimes they are one in part of the vest and sewn in.

Protection levels:

II- Will stop 9mm 124 Gr. FMJ(5″ barrel/1175 fps) to 375 Magnum 158 gr. (6″ barrel, 1395 fps)

IIIA- Will stop 9mm 124 Gr. FMJ (16″ Barrel/1400 fps) to 44 Magnum 140 gr. (6″ barrel, 1400 fps)

Ceramic/Steel Plates:

sapi plate

Now this is where the price gets relatively expensive, however this is also where you get maximum ballistic protection.  These are Steel or Ceramic Plates that are slid into a pouch on the front and back of the vest itself.  As far as Steel vs. Ceramic goes, its a personal choice.  Steel has a lower profile, however rounds can fragment and hit you while the ceramic doesn’t have this problem.

Protection Levels:

III- Will stop a 148 gr.  7.62x51mm NATO M80  BALL @ 2780 fps

IV- Will stop 166 gr. 30-06 Springfield M2 AP @2880 fps

When you buy a set of body armor you will look at all three components and these will dictate the price, the best thing to look at first is how do you envision yourself using this, what are the likely set of scenarios you will face.

In my opinion getting something like what I have is not necessary for a realistic scenario, that is the all in one tactical vest, I own the Eagle MARCIRAS vest, that has the ballistic inserts as well as Level IV plates.

Now why is that a bad idea? and why do I have it then!

I have it because I purchased my own vest when i was contracting and spent a pretty penny on it, but I wanted the best gear for the job I was doing, which IS NOT what the average prepper or ANYONE will face in a collapse scenario most likely.

You will not be assaulting positions or rolling around waiting for a fight and need to have this all in one package, now I understand there is a small possibility that might happen, so there is a middle road to do this and  will offer you all the same protection but will also give you the ability to dress “up” and “down” depending on the situation.

I would look into getting a vest that is made to be wore underneath clothing, more for police, that has a very slim fitting ballistic inserts with simple velcro straps to hold it clsoe to you, that also has the pockets to put in the ceramic/steel plates.  This way you can wear the whole package without looking to bulky and definitely without looking like you are itching for a fight.

If you have to go to Defcon 1 status you can always throw on a padded web belt with magazine pouches as well as a chest rig, you can have that laying in your vehicle to grab and put on if needed during a collapse scenario, but this way you can still have the protection without anyone every knowing you have it on.

I would recommend this type of load-out for all preppers, since most of us are on tight budgets and cant afford to buy multiple sets of body armor.

IMPORTANT

It is vital that you understand this, many people will just buy a set of ceramic plates with a small “plate carrier” that can go under the clothing.  This works very well for concealment. HOWEVER one of the reasons that the military has plates ON TOP of soft armor is that even though the plates can stop 7.62x51mm, etc. the round will still have a large amount of force that will go into your body.  The round will be stopped which is the main lifesaver, however the force of the round has to go somewhere, much of it is dissipated into the plate, but without soft armor underneath this will go into your body and the soft tissue which can cause internal bleeding and worse.  In a combat scenario in the military this is considered “ok” as you can be medivac’d relatively quickly and will be able to receive proper medical treatment, but in a collapse scenario this could spell death for you.  Never just wear plates unless you have no other option, i.e. you don’t have soft armor, in that case plates are better than a 7.62 to the chest.

A Few Reason’s you SHOULD

Now there are a hundred, thousand, million different scenarios we can think of in a collapse, partial collapse scenario where It may be smart to have some personal protective equipment (PPE) or Body armor is it known colloquially.

What if the security situation has gotten worse, but things are still operating halfway normally, the stores are still open but gangs and miscreants have realized that food and the staples are worth more than rims, cars and gold watches.  You are coming back to your car with the groceries, and someone approaches you with a gun, you pull yours and you both get a shot off, now both of you are on the ground, however you get up and now you have a big bruise and some broken food items, but no real injuries, they have some REAL injuries, you live to fight another day.

This is a very real scenario in that type of collapse.   And there are, like a said millions of different scenarios where this could matter.  The Stereotypical prepper fiction tale of  some large group assaulting your home you are fighting back going from one side of the house to another holding them off, if you have PPE it could mean that stray round DOESN’T kill you, etc.

The reasons why it would be helpful are clear, if you are in a shoot out it could save your life, unless you are shot in the head, arms or legs, or they are using a large caliber bullet, like a 30-06 or 7mm Hunting round w/out Level IV Ceramic plates (side note, also why I find some of gun control debate laughable, when they talk about “armor piercing rounds” for AR’s, etc.  Any large caliber hunting round will destroy a set of body armor w.out Level IV Body Armor which most cops if any carry…)

WHY NOT?

This is a harder case to make, but there are reasons NOT to buy PPE/Body Armor.

One reason is that it is expensive, not so much the Second Chance vest/Police Vest style of vests, those can be pretty cheap, but buying the Ceramic Plates to counter Smaller caliber Rifle rounds.

A quick search of sites shows that each SAPI plate at Level III can run around $250 for a ceramic plate, which means you could be running $500 for a set or more, that combined with a decent IIIa concealed vest that will cost you around $500 you are looking at $1000 for a full set up, which is often out of the average preppers price range, and even if you can swing it….in my opinion there are better things for you to buy.

I know it is a common thread in prepper fiction and other talking points of a collapse, but the chance of you getting in a out and out shootout will be low and in one that you will have time to wear the vest (unless you just wear it all day everyday from first sign on out) is even slimmer.

This is not saying that its not a good thing to have, we prepare for any scenario, but in reality saving the $500 for plates and getting another 6 months plus of food will take you much farther.

There are so many different things you could buy with that money that will help you 99% of the time versus that 1% chance occurrence.

That being said, if you really feel you must and you can swing it, buy it AFTER you have the rest of your preps handled and are comfortable with the level you are at, if you don’t ever get any, don’t sweat it.  Yes it may seem easy for me to say, because i have some, but I will tell you this, even in combat zones you don’t get in shootouts every day (barring a few REAALLLLY high tempo units in some really crappy areas) and you don’t get shot every day either. So in a collapse scenario, as bad as that is, it wont be like Afghanistan or Iraq at the height of the insurgencies there, so perhaps it would be best to just save your money.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Well if you are dead set on it, i can give you a few recommendations based on my own personal experience.

I own the EAGLE MARCIRAS vest, it is a High Profile Maritime version of their CIRAS vest, it has a pull cord that runs throughout the vest, one pull and it dumps off you.  Why is that? well in Maritime environments if you fell overboard it would drag you down, which is a bad thing.  In Iraq/Afghanistan I realized I wanted to keep this thing and allow my body to be easily looked at if i was injured so this would allow the Doc to do so without cutting it off.  it was also VERY comfortable and easily modded out to how i wanted it.  It runs around $500 without the armor.

I also own a Blackhawk Plate Carrier This is a no frils plate carrier that went over my soft armor, and when used in conjunction with the second chance vest and a Tactical Tailor padded Belt with my mag pouches (Link is to LApolicegear.com which you can get a discount from as a member!), i could conceal myself pretty well with a larger shirt and jacket.

Make sure you do a thorough review of the seller, and don’t waste your money on some cheap chinese knockoff from Ebay, if the price seems to good to be true it is, and you will not be getting what you paid for when it means the most.

Also know that Knives and sharp objects like icepicks or crossbows will go through soft armor easily, the kevlar weave is made to absorb the impact of the round and dissipate its force not allowing it to penetrate.  if you watch the videos in slow motion it looks like a pebble hitting a still pond, waves go out in all directions, so you will not have STAB protection with kevlar, a cheap option for that is just plain old phonebooks like inmates use, or shelling out cash for stab protection vests.

These are just a few suggestions and only based on what i have personally used, so if you find something that fits you better, go for it!

Product Review: No Rinse Shampoo

no rinse shampoo

I received an email from Cleanlife Products asking me to review their line of “No Rinse” products for keeping good hygiene while not in your home. These products are primarily advertised for those who camp and don’t want to tug along a solar shower or constantly haul buckets of water to their campsite. These also work well for the prepper community as they offer a alternative for keeping yourself clean in uncertain times.

I personally tried the shampoo and hopefully from the pictures you can tell the difference between the before and after (this isnt a professional photography job so will have to take my word for it!)

Before

NO RINSE SHAMPOO BEFORE

AFTER

NO RINSE SHAMPOO AFTER

I had purposefully not showered for 5 days and had been shoveling and scraping ice out of the driveway, off the deck etc throughout that whole week as we got hit with a huge snowstorm; my hair was sufficiently nasty from daily wear and sweating from working.  I would have gone 7 days but my wife gave me the hint that she wasn’t enjoying my new ‘look’!  I went by the simple guidelines given…

  • Apply NoRinse in my hair until it was saturated and worked it into a lather
  • The Lather brought the oil and dirt to the surface of the hair…
  • Towel Dry to remove the dirt and oil

That’s it, pretty simple, easy enough for this Former Marine to figure out!  If you actually have a REAALLLLY nasty head of hair you just repeat the process until the end result is to your liking.  One rinse was enough for me and my hair felt much less oily and actually quite “fluffy” and had a out of the shower feel to be honest.

The Shampoo runs about $7.98 for a bottle or $7.56 if you purchase a case of 24.

The NoRinse line also includes….

Body Wash

Bathing wipes

As well as Products for your Pets

I see this as a good product to have in your bug out Bag or just camping accessories as a short term use product and too expensive for say an emergency lasting months or years.  Having this in your BOB would work well to keep yourself clean and be a psychological help to those who are in a bad situation.  Like Ive mentioned many times never underestimate the need for small things like this, a board game, books, things that take your mind off the present situation for even a few minutes can be of immense help to someones state of mind.

Not to be sexist, but men out there, the women in your lives will appreciate this much more than you ever will and will probably help to build a lot of support and well…love for you if you thought enough ahead of time to take care of something that…in my experience women appreciate very much…clean hair.  Also they will probably appreciate you not smelling horrible as well!

Clean Life Products has a special page for those who are focusing on ‘Survival/Disaster Prep”  as well.

Minicast Episode 16: The EU Tax Raids

German-police

I read 3 separate stories that I think gives us a good foreshadowing of what is to come in the U.S.  While I know we are different, etc, etc, And i have never thought everything would mirror the EU when our time comes, I think it gives one a good idea of how thinks will probably resemble when we hid the skids…the big one!

Now I believe that our government is watching closely all the different ‘programs’ and things being implemented in various countries, and seeing how the people react and how they work out.  This can probably give them a good idea as to how to refine it to be more “American”, or at least more “palatable” to us.

I talk about.

  • The Raids on the “Rich” Tax Evaders in Germany
  • How things always start with the rich then end up with us
  • How Massive Tax hikes are coming to the EU and how they may affect us
  • Seizure of Privately held gold in Italy
  • How we wont see a confiscation of Gold or Guns on a massive scale like some like to think we will and why

  • 1  tsp active dry yeast (found in bakery aisle)

HOW TO MAKE

  1. Take the Soda Bottle and cut the top off below where it starts to narrow to come up to the top.  flip it and place it neck down into the open soda container.
  2. Bring 1 Cup of water to a boil
  3. Dissolve Sugar into boiling water
  4. Once the Sugar is dissolved, remove the pot/pan from the stove and stir in two cups of cool water well.
  5. Check the Temperature of the syrup to make sure it isn’t above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.  If it is hotter let it cool further
  6. Add the Yeast, you dont need to mix it, just pour in
  7. Place the syrup in the bottom of the bottle
  8. Tape the Two Bottle pieces together.

The yeast will ferment the sugar (thats how you make liquor basically).  As it ferments it releases CO2 and attracts Mosquitos.  Put Black paper around the bottle to give the little guys the dark environment they love.  Place this in a dark humid place for 2 weeks to get the best results.  After those 2 weeks you will need to empty and rinse out the bottle and refill it with the fermenting goo.

IRS: We can Read your Emails

IRS

The IRS according to their 2009 In house employee manual states that they don’t need a warrant to read your emails, just a subpoena, which doesn’t require a judges “ok”

Why you may ask?

Because according to the IRS, You, Me, anyone on the Internet “do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in such communications.”

That’s right..we don’t have an expectation to have our communications be private…now a public forum board, yes that is PUBLIC, however my private emails are well that…private.
This position was reiterated by a 2010 presentation by the IRS Office of the General Counsel as well as stayed unchanged AFTER a March 2011 update to the manual.
This is strange since a FEDERAL appeals court decision in U.S. v. Warshak stated that the police VIOLATED a mans constitutional rights by reading his emails without a warrant; this was kindly sidestepped by the IRS with them saying..well it only applies to the Sixth Circuit Courts area, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
The real issue is that many law enforcement departments and agencies along with agencies like the IRS have long argued that people have “limited privacy rights” over information shared over third party networks.  Now when this pertains to Facebook or Twitter, I would agree to a certain point, however in the realm of private emails NOT AT ALL.
The “right” to this information has been drawn from the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act that states that government officials only need a subpoena to read emails that have been opened or are more than 180 days old.  This is a law that has come up for review and updating.
I would urge you to write your Congressman and tell them to support further protections for private electronic communications.

Gold Confisication worries: Coins as “Jewelry”

american gold eagle pendant

One of the things many folks who look into precious metals worry about is “What if they confiscate the Gold and Silver”

Well for one, and I’ve posted on this before, please read it, but to reiterate briefly, whats worse? you buying it and having it confiscated, or you not buying it and its never confiscated and now YOU CANT USE IT!

One of the clauses that was in the disgusting, but toothless bill during the Depression (You know the one thats always pointed to and people say “Hey don’t buy it they’ll just take it like FDR did!”) was that jewelry and other things of that nature were exempted.  You couldn’t own say a Gold Coin, but you could own Gold Jewelry…or Gold Coins made into jewelry…as some people did to get around it.

Once again there were two groups of people in that ‘confiscation’

1) The honest citizens who obeyed and turned it in

and

2)Everyone Else who didn’t turn in anything.   Did they get arrested? NO there was ONE guy who was prosecuted, he tried to pull out a HUGE (5,000 ounces)amount of Gold coins from his bank after the bill went into effect (since they were currency at the time) and he got made and example of.  The prosecution failed and was dropped but he still lost his gold.

The government didn’t bust down doors and rip open grannies mattress, that never happened ok?

However that isn’t to say it is out of the realm of possibility, so one should be aware of it.

WHAT COULD I DO IF THEY DID CONFISCATE?

Like i just mentioned they did not confiscate Jewelry, so some smart individuals made them INTO jewelry.

One way would be to drill them and put a necklace through them, however i WOULD NOT DO THAT! Unless you had no other choice, personally I would rather sack them and bury them in the mountains first, but that is just me.

Another way, and a smarter one is to purchase Coin Pendant Holders like this one

In my opinion it would be a WASTE of money to do anything with your silver coins in this fashion, the cost is too high to make it worthwhile, however for your Gold or Platinum Coins, this would make perfect sense.

It would also work well for on the go and bugging out, you could wear your wealth around your neck on a leather strap or shoelace.  Have no other necklaces on, and chances are if you were robbed or stopped no one would look for anything valuable under your shirt on the end of a nasty old shoelace!

Often times when confiscations come, like they do with guns, they will usually follow old laws that have done them in the past to give them more cover or “historical precedent” I think that IF, and that’s a IF a metals confiscation came that’s what it would be like.

First of it would be voluntary and if you had a small amount, say less than 100k chances are you’ll be more than fine, unless you’ve drawn attention to yourself in other ways, like say gone on youtube flashing guns around and making threats.

You would be more than fine to just bury it and call it a day.  However if they did come you could at least make the big ticket stuff like gold eagles into jewelry, so at least you could hold onto them, you can always lie and say that it was stolen last year.  Didn’t call the police because you didn’t have insurance anyways and didn’t want a hassle, etc.

This is another good reason NOT TO BE AN ASS, don’t be on the net making threats, sounding crazy, waving guns around, or googling “how to kill someone”.  This will make you more “desirable” to be searched, and thus put your wealth and preps in more jeopardy.  Be smart, fly under the radar folks.

I also talked about this in two posts, WALLFLOWER PREPPING: HOW TO FLY UNDER THE RADAR and my post on internet security and privacy.

Side note:

If for some reason you own a Title II weapon (often referred to as a CLASS III weapon, of which there are NONE.  Dealers who sell automatics or suppressors are known as CLASS III dealers, the weapons are known as TITLE II WEAPONS!) Be very wary, and its a good reason NOT TO OWN ONE!  Don’t get me wrong, you should EVERY RIGHT TO, but if you do, as you SHOULD know, then you are subject to ATF inspection at any time of your paperwork.

THEY MAY NOT ENTER YOUR HOME OR COMPEL YOU TO PRODUCE THE WEAPON WITHOUT A WARRANT (or subsequent change to the 4th amendment by the Supreme Court).  However this doesn’t mean it may or may not stop them from doing so anyways.  So if I were you I would store my gold, silver, and ALL OTHER weapons in a separate area from you NFA Title II weapons, this way if a legal warrant appeared, or one didn’t but they were a-holes and forced their way in, you can show them where it is and they have no recourse to search the premises.  This also means dont have two safes side by side in the middle of a garage stacked with food buckets and solar panels!

Episode 17: UN Small Arms Treaty and Fusion Centers

un_gun

In response to recent stories last week I address two big ones, or at least one big one and one smaller one you might not had heard about.

UN SMALL ARMS TREATY
I will address the concerns expressed on many sites and facebook pages and

  • Why it is not a good thing
  • But also not that concerning to liberty minded people in the United States.
  • Why we will have to lose the fight domestically before any international treaties will take away our gun rights.

“Fusion Centers”

  • What are they?
  • Why are they a concern?
  • Who are they spying on?

Minicast Episode 15: Boston Terror and Silver Update

search-engine-optimization-boston1

Today’s Episode is a somber one…

I wanted to speak briefly on the events of yesterday’s terrorist attack in Boston, what my fears are about this even and what comes after and most importantly to send out my thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this.

I also wanted to talk about the recent dips in the Precious metals markets.  It was hard to move from something so terrible to something so mundane as precious metals, however I don’t want to dwell on the negative, to give my thoughts and prayers to the families as well as help to continue to provide information to all of you out there.

I speak about…

  • Why its a good time to buy
  • Why I don’t give financial advice, it is ultimately up to you
  • Where I think the markets are going

Thank you for listening, in times like these remember and be thankful for all you have and all those around you.  God Bless.
