Finding True North Without a Compass

These are a few methods for Finding North without a compass. BE AWARE THAT THERE ARE SOME DRAWBACKS AND MAY NOT WORK WHERE YOU LIVE! SO READ THE NOTES BELOW EACH SECTION!

GREAT NORTHERN PREPPER OUT!

The Shadow-Tip Method

The Shadow-tip method

Place a stick upright in the ground so that you can see its shadow. Alternatively, you can use the shadow of a fixed object. Nearly any object will work, but the taller the object is, the easier it will be to see the movement of its shadow, and the narrower the tip of the object is, the more accurate the reading will be. Make sure the shadow is cast on a level, brush-free spot.

2.

Mark the tip of the shadow with an object

Mark the tip of the shadow with a small object, such as a pebble, or a distinct scratch in the ground. Try to make the mark as small as possible so as to pinpoint the shadow’s tip, but make sure you can identify the mark later.

3.

Wait 10-15 minutes. The shadow tip will move mostly from west to east in a curved line.

4.

Mark the new position of the shadow’s end

Mark the new position of the shadow’s tip with another small object or scratch. It will likely move only a short distance.

5.

Draw a straight line in the ground between the two marks.

Draw a straight line in the ground between the two marks. This is an approximate east-west line.

6.

Stand with the first mark (west) on your left, and the other (east) on your right.

Stand with the first mark (west) on your left, and the other (east) on your right. You are now facing mostly toward true north, regardless of where you are in the world. The illustration shows that the sun and marker at Points 1 is what is happening for Step 2. At Points 2, it shows what is happening for Step 4. This method is based on the fact that the sun moves across the sky from East to West.

NOTE:  THIS IS NOT FOR USE IN ALASKA ABOVE ABOVE THE CENTRAL KENAI PENINSULA (ANYWHERE ABOVE 60 degrees North Latitude) I included it for readers in the south and those that may live Southeast Alaska or Canada

———————————————–

WATCH METHOD (FOR NORTHERN HEMISPHERE)

1.

Find an analog watch (the kind with hour and minute hands) that is set accurately. Place it on a level surface, such as the ground, or hold it horizontal in your hand.

2.

Point the hour hand at the sun.

3.

Bisect (that is, find the center point of) the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o’clock mark (the number 12 on the watch). The center of the angle between the hour hand and twelve o’clock mark is the north-south line. If you don’t know which way is north and which south, just remember that no matter where you are, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. In the northern hemisphere the sun is due south at midday. If your watch is set to daylight saving time bisect the angle between the hour hand and the one o’clock mark instead

NOTES:

  • If you only have a digital watch, you can still aim the watch accurately at the sun, as you figure out where the hour hand will be. Use 12, 3, 6 and 9 o clock’s angles to guide you to the other hours, smaller increments for half/quarter hours.
  • If you have a 24h dial on your clock (like many pilot watches), then just point the hour hand at the sun, and north is at the 0/24h mark.
  • These methods may require practice to perfect, so it’s a good idea to try them a couple times when you can check your readings. That way, you’ll be able to rely on them if you’re in a survival situation.
  • The watch method is not recommended in lower latitudes, particularly below 20° in either hemisphere.

————————————————————————————————————————-

USING THE STARS (NORTHERN HEMISPHERE)

1.

Locate the North Star (Polaris) in the night sky. The North Star is the last star in the handle of the Little Dipper constellation. If you have trouble finding it, find the Big Dipper. The two lowest stars in the Big Dipper (the outermost stars of the cup of the dipper) form a straight line that “points” to the North Star. You may also find the constellation Cassiopeia, which is always opposite the Big Dipper. The North Star is located about midway between the central star of Cassiopeia and the Big Dipper (see figure).

2.

Draw an imaginary line straight down from the North Star to the ground. This direction is true north, and if you can find a landmark in the distance at this point, you can use it to guide yourself.

NOTE:

  • When trying to locate the North Star it is important to remember that, despite popular belief, the North Star is NOT the brightest star in the sky. The only remarkable thing about it is that it is the only star in the sky that does not move.
  • The North Star becomes higher in the sky the further north you travel, and it is not useful about 70° N latitude.

Doomsday Dating….its a brave new world!

Doomsday dating sites: ‘Don’t face the future alone’

By Blake Ellis @CNNMoneyMarch 29, 2012: 6:38 AM ET

doomsday-dating-mtexplorer2.top.jpgOne Survivalist Singles member, Mtexplorer2, says “a woman wearing a backpack in her profile picture is an automatic 10.”

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — For people who spend every day preparing for disaster — whether it’s a 2012 apocalypse, a nuclear meltdown, an economic collapse, a hurricane or a tsunami — it can be hard to find a compatible partner.

Canning venison, shooting firearms, living off the grid and creating manure from human waste just aren’t traditional interests many people look for when browsing mainstream dating sites like eHarmony or Match.com.

That’s why a site called Survivalist Singles has entered the online dating scene, catering specifically to this niche community of “preppers,” “survivalists” and “doomsdayers.”

Survivalist Singles, which officially launched in 2010, boasts the slogan, “Don’t face the future alone.” Its ranks are growing — quadrupling to about 1,640 members from around 400 at the end of 2010.

Members of the site range widely in their doomsday beliefs, said Andrea Burke, a 45-year-old middle school art teacher from Montana who took over the site from its previous owner last summer.

“Most will agree that something is brewing that may change life as we know it, whether it be a collapse of the economy, an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) or other natural or government disaster,” Burke said.

My doomsday tab: $130K on bunkers, guns and more

The site is free for now, but Burke is planning to charge a $5 monthly membership fee so she can generate income from her project. She is considering using a slogan like, “Find love for less than the price of a box of bullets” to draw in paying members.

For female preppers interested in finding a man, the site is a dating goldmine. There are currently about two men for every woman on the site (which is a big disparity compared to a site like Match.com, where there’s a roughly even split), and the average member is over 50.

The most popular book among members is James Wesley Rawles’ “Patriots,” about a group of Christians who must survive an economic meltdown that throws the country into complete chaos and leads to a second civil war. “SHTF” (When s*** hits the fan) and “TEOTWAWKI” (The end of the world as we know it) are common acronyms members include on their profiles, said Burke.

One user, who goes by the screenname Mtexplorer2 but preferred that his real name not be used, said he tried many mainstream dating sites but was always turned down by potential matches as soon as they found out he was a survivalist. Survivalist Singles lets him put everything out in the open, he said, and women only contact him if they have similar beliefs or appreciate his lifestyle.

“It’s hard to connect with someone who doesn’t have a similar mindset. You can’t explain why your truck is packed like you’re always ready for an expedition — they don’t get it,” he said. “But when you meet another survivalist, you start talking about all this stuff and the women look at you like you have a million dollars in the bank.”

9 signs the world will end in 2012

His profile lists many conventional hobbies and interests like hiking, camping and eating Mexican food. But it also mentions his “extensive background with firearms for defense and hunting.” And that he has an alternative water source, likes to go to thrift stores to find gadgets that don’t use electricity, and cans venison so he’ll have meat “if the grid goes down and there are no freezers.”

His idea of an attractive woman is someone who is physically fit and loves the outdoors. “I’m not looking for someone wearing a designer dress and purse — I want someone who looks wholesome, and a woman wearing a backpack in her profile picture is an automatic 10,” he said.

Because he lives in the mountains of Montana, distance has been a problem. He has met only one woman face-to-face out of more than 20 he has corresponded with on the site. After she visited him in Montana, they decided to just remain friends.

Distance is one of several issues cited by another member, Larissa Kama, 42, who goes by the screenname nwredhead. Kama has a “bug-out bag” full of gear near her front door in case disaster strikes, but she considers herself less “hardcore” than many of the men she has encountered on the site.

“I’ve come across a lot of freaks who live in a hole in the ground, who message me and say, ‘Run, run to me — I’m a mile underground in the middle of Nebraska,” said Kama, who lives in Portland, Ore. “I don’t want to hide down in a bunker for the rest of my life. I’m really okay with the outside world — we’re not facing any end-of-world scenario yet, so I want to live in this moment.”

Some members, though, have already found love on the site. Nate Tammaro, whose screenname was Iron Ranger, found his soul mate, or “twin flame,” only two days after joining Survivalist Singles. They live six hours away from each other so they have only met in person twice, but Tammaro plans to move to Missouri to be with her this summer.

“When we met, we immediately knew there was no one else for us — it was the sentence-finishing type of love,” said Tammaro. The relationship has changed his outlook on prepping: Tammaro now believes his calling is to help others find their way once the “end of the world as we know it” arrives. “I’m optimistic about the future now that I’ve found love,” he said.

Others on the site aren’t just looking for love. A 44-year-old female user with the screenname Arnold, for example, states on her profile that she is looking for a survival group in addition to a man. One skill she would bring to the table, she noted, is making “humanure.” This involves converting human excrement into fertilizer — which may be necessary in case a disaster strikes and there is no running water.

Aside from Survivalist Singles, several other dating sites are popping up for preppers. PrepperDating.com was started last year and has about 70 members. And Kwink.com, a site that lets singles join niche dating communities, like “health nuts” and “Jesus freaks” is also advertising a community for “doomsday preppers” and “doomsdayers.”

“Spend your remaining days with someone that shares your instinct to prepare and survive the end of the world as we know it,” Kwink’s site says. “Don’t use those generic dating sites that can’t cater to your core trait. The Doomsday dating community is your place to connect, share and grow with similar people.” To top of page

This is mostly i think just a grab by companies trying to capitalize on the growing “Survival” brand as the obsession with the mayan 2012 thing grows this year and the advent of shows like Doomsday preppers and the like.  It will dissapear by next year and the cream will rise to the top as those REALLY serious about preparedness continue their journeys

Healthcare law seemingly doomed

LA TIMES ARTICLE: JUSTICES POISED TO STRIKE DOWN ENTIRE HEALTHCARE LAW

I dont care what your thoughts are on healthcare, no one rational believes that it is perfect, BUT that being said there is a big jump from reforms in insurance and tort law to INDIVIDUAL MANDATES

There are plenty of mandates, billions of them in federal, state and local laws

Mandates may be,

you have to have a license and insurance to drive your car

you cant smoke in public buildings

you cant manufacture illegal drugs

you have to have insurance for floods in certain areas to obtain a mortgage

you have to have rabies shots for dogs in certain areas

But these are all voluntary. I DONT have to drive a car (and yes there is that contention with the difference between driving and the right to locomotion, but i wont get into that here)  YOU dont have to have a dog, you dont have to have a mortgage.

If you want any of those things THEN you have to abide by said laws, regulations, etc.

But this mandate specifies that by the very fact you are alive you HAVE to purchase this, that is the root of the issue, not sick people dying, not poor people not getting hospital care, and whatever other inflammatory statements that have been thrown out.

Its the precedent set, if allowed, that the us government has the RIGHT to mandate by force of law, including arrest and incarceration a mandatory requirement on every man, woman and child, not through a choice to participate in an activity, or have a item, but by the fact that you are just….here

Natgeo Doomsday Preppers Season 2

As i wrote wrote to the members of the GREAT NORTHERN PREPPER FORUM which can be accessed through that link or at the main site GREAT NORTHERN PREPPER

National Geographic contacted me to see if i could “recommend” any preppers in Alaska for the Season 2 of “Doomsday Preppers”

THis is the forum message.

——————————

I would feel remiss in my duties here if i didnt pass this along.

FIRST a DISCLAIMER:

I personally would never go on this show cfjohns mentioned he is friends with one of the people that was on it, and that she wasnt exactly happy with her treatment.  I think that the show purposefully pigeonholes people into categories…The “Im preparing for ______(madrid fault, solar flare, bio attack)” and many of them are just general preppers but the producers want them to be a (my words) “itemized” prepper.  I think that to prepare specifically for one event is shortsighted, even though i have my pet theories myself, i think that to be prepared in general is the best option and whatever comes your way you will be better off than 99% of the people around you, but i digress.

I really caution you, and if you asked i would say no dont do it.
BUT it does offer compensation of some sort im sure (what i have no idea)

That being said.

Natgeo contacted me and said they were looking for preppers in all 50 states and wondered if i could reccomend any preppers in Alaska. granted i dont REALLY know you all that well, other than meeting and talking on this post.
But if this is something you would be interested in I would be willing to pass that information along and pass to you the information they provided me (questionarre, etc.)
I know the money would be nice, but once again i caution you.

message me here or email me at rmorgan@greatnorthernprepper.com if you want more anonymity

Waste disposal

Not at the computer composing this on the blackberry but was thinking about survival and waste disposal. In a collapse situation or just a nominally affected world with a bad economy, lower tax revenue and fewer or a lesser quality of services, waste disposal will be a major issue.

During the middle ages it was an acute problem that as the citys grew people crowded in further even to the point as you can see in some older sections of german citiesthat homes extended over alleyways, basically the second floors of both homes touched over top the alleyway. This combined with poor sanitation (bathroom buckets, food waste and cleaning greywater) was tossed out the windows into the streets to wash away (albeit slowly and not efficiently) this closeness and waste led to the outbreaks of diseases and allowed the plague to spread rapidly (ie the black death)

We need to be aware of this since if services are cut down or just not as efficient human, food and material waste disposal will be a major issue. See what happened in naples a few years back when the garbage men went on strike. If just the garbage was shut down for a week it would pile up in the streets and anywhere humans occupied, animal scavengers would descend heavily everywhere, rotting foods and waste would spread disease and sickness. And human waste, if the water shut off or the sewage backed up and took longer to fix we would see RAMPANT disease.

Look into self composting toilets or waste disposal techniques for yourself and your unique situation. Not saying start using them now! Just know how to build them, maybe even build and use one for a week as a test and see where things could be tweaked or if you did it wrong

Prepping is about learning and USING all techniques BEFORE bad things happen. Knowledge is half the battle, testing and trying is the other 25% and finally perfecting the technique is the final 25%.

Daily thoughts 3/27/12

Preppers too often when talking to non preppers or even those somewhat interested in prepping overload these individuals. Example- hey I know you’re into prepping and I was kindof interested in it
Prepper- yeah!? Awesome see what you need to do is get about 30 lbs of honey per person per year 250 pounds of wheat, get the hard red winter wheat it lasts longer. And you’ll need a solar wind gasifier hybrid system with a battery bank of deep cycle batteries. And also barter and trade item and gold. Do you know how the fed works? Our money is going to crash and die. The debt is…..

You can see where I’m going with this.
What we need to do as preppers is not be so…excited…well that’s not right…I guess I mean overzealous when you talk to people not of the mindset yet. Don’t overwhelm them with lots of info. Start them out small tell them to make sure they have a couple weeks of food in their pantry that they keep stocked. Tell them to buy food they already buy or the generic versions and rotate it out. And show them how to start small gardens. Rooftop, window small backyard whatever their case may be so they can start growing a little of their own food for the week. I think gardening is a great “gateway drug” (horrible term I know!) To prepping. Once they get that more than likely they will come back asking for more info and where to go from there or they will be on the net learning themselves. From there the conversation will grow!
