Last Minute Prepping: What to do during the meltdown

So we all think about it, what will we do when the meltdown happens?

Now when I say that I don’t necessarily mean a pandemic flu hitting and everyone is rushing to get stuff to lock themselves in for 3 months, It could be anything from a Hurricane to that less likely but still possibly event.

To make things more convenient for my writing I will focus on say “A” meltdown and not “THEY” meltdown, lets take the economic paradigm shift that is coming sooner or later as a framework.

Fade to Black…

Camera opens on a grey sky, and pans to a Television, the newscaster is talking with a round table of financial “experts” who all talk about why the Dow has just took a 4000 point slide and the Government circuit breakers automatically halted trading at 2:25pm NYST

Side note:

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has 3 circuit breaker levels (as of Feb 2013 these are correct)

  • Level 1- 10% drop (as of Q1 2013, 1300 points)
  • Level 2- 20% drop (as of Q1 2013, 2650 points)
  • Level 3- 30% drop (as of Q1 2013, 3950 points)

If it is before 3:25 pm NYST a Level 1 or 2 will halt all trading for 15 minutes, after 3:25 it will not halt trading, and any level 3 drop will halt trading for the day.

Anyways back to my story…

Now people are starting to freak out, talk of the Great Depression is on everyone’s lips, mentions of Black Friday, worries about whats in the bank, things go bad quickly.

Who knows what will happen tomorrow?  Will this be the beginning of a swift end or just a major bump before a leveling off and another “recovery”

Speaking to you as preppers at whatever level you are, you have at least some things put away and are better off than 99% of the people you see on the street, you start to think of your Bug in/Bug out plans and wonder what to do next

Well this is what you need to do and what to consider for your next move.

WHAT ARE MY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES?

You should have a pretty good idea what you have in your preps already, where you are in your food preps, self defense, power, etc.

The reason I am writing this is so IF…IF this happens in this way you wont have to be thinking this out like we are right now.

You should be constantly keeping tabs on what you have and where you want to improve on next, this way you know…”OK I’m good with food, but I’m short on some ammo for my personal defense weapons…” or “I need to have more gas for the generator and the car…”

Gas

Lets say for instance you needed gas, when you first saw all the troubles, I would take your vehicle (and if you have a spouse, significant other, family, etc. have them come in their car as well) go and head to the nearest store that carries gas cans, buy as many as you can and head to the gas station.

People might already be freaking out, but if you are on this early on you can probably skip the long lines and maybe only wait for a few people.

Fill up your car first then as many gas cans as you can before you the limit on your card hits, then bring in the next car in your family convoy and do the same, perhaps send the other family member back home and you get back in line to fill up more, that is up to you and depends on how many you bought.

Hostility

This applies to all places you may go, but lets take the gas station for instance.

If you are holding up the line filling up your gas cans and some jackass who’s all riled up in his corvette worried that things are crashing down and all his money is tied up in expensive crap that isnt going to help him any longer starts to give you grief, DON’T RESPOND.  Don’t try to argue just (in my opinion) just finish filling the can you are, load up and go.

There’s no need to get into a fistfight in public over gas, and if you end up badly injured you are now in worst shape than if you hadn’t gotten the gas (or food, etc) in the first place.

Stay calm, don’t overreact, just do what you came to do and avoid confrontation.  Now if you feel you are in danger, respond accordingly, don’t escalate, but take measures appropriate to respond to the hostile actions of the other person.  This is all situation dependent and remember….you are not in mad max scenario yet, nor you probably will never be, so overreacting and pulling a gun or something could get you locked up or worse, and once again you are in a worse situation than when you went there.

Food

Now even if you have years worth of food and all your preps are pretty well covered it would still behoove you to maybe grab a little more.  This is all situation dependent and you will have to gauge the risk vs reward on your own, depending on what things look like TO YOU

In the great book “How to Survive the End of the World as we Know it” by J.W. Rawles he has some sound advice in regards to this exact situation.

When the panic starts to hit, you will still probably be able to safely go to stores, people may be on edge and panicking, however things wont go to Book Of Eli in the blink of an eye.  You’re best bet is to go to a place like Costco or Sam’s Club.  Grab one of their large flat bottom carts and go to the strategic areas first.

Hit up the aisles with the food/misc products you need or want the most of, this could be…

  • 50 lb bags of Rice
  • Pancake Mix
  • 25 lb bags of Sugar/Salt
  • Honey
  • Olive Oil/Cooking oils
  • Batteries (car and or/AA/AAA/D, etc)
  • Clothing
  • All of the above

With the Flat Bottom carts you can stack A CRAP TON of stuff.  Food may be a priority so hit those up first then move to batteries/clothing.   Stay away from fresh foods of course unless you are planning on smoking/salting/etc. it.  in this situation non-perishable is the key.

This is all situation dependent if people are truly freaking out and it seems dangerous, don’t go.  The point of Preparedness and being a prepper is to do the things that increase your survivability, not decrease it.

WHAT IF ALL THE ‘GOOD STUFF’ IS GONE?

What do you do if you are johnny come lately and the stores have already been picked over, no bags of rice, no cans of chili, etc.

Now this is…once again…situation dependent, if its a hurricane, than i wouldn’t necessarily worry about doing all of the stuff that will be mentioned, this is more geared towards an event that you think might be signalling the “A” meltdown that just might be “THEY” meltdown.

Look for items that would still have barter value, or be of use for self sufficiency, but haven’t been picked over.

These could be…

  • Canning Materials
  • Cheese Cloth
  • Crisco jars (remember…candles!!!)
  • Rain Gear
  • Mosquito repellant
  • Camping supplies
  • Clothing
  • Salt Licks for Deer can be consumed by people
  • Exotic Ammunition for weapons you don’t own  (30-30, 45-70, 7mm Mauser, etc.)
  • Shampoo, Soap, Facial Cleansers
  • Feminine Hygiene Products (even if you are NOT a woman and have none in the home, excellent bartering)
  • Baby Diapers, Rash Creams (same reason as above)
  • Shoes/Boots (good working kind not flashy basketball shoes unless that’s all that is left)
  • Some food may be left like beets/etc. that no one likes.  Grab it, beets make a better meal than a empty plate.
  • First Aid Supplies, gauze, Tylenol, band aids, etc.
  • Bleach
  • Musical Birthday cards for improvised Security
  • Hand Warmers (can be used for sealing buckets of food)
  • Yeast/Bread Making supplies
  • Anything that can store and be of use

If you are at one of the big box hardware stores look for

  • Nails/Screws
  • Hand Tools (hammers, screwdrivers,etc)
  • Gardening supplies
  • Shovels/Picks/Axes
  • Food Grade Buckets (Lowes has food grade buckets now)
  • Gamma Seal Lids (Home Depot often has these)
  • Spray Paint (Drab Colors)
  • Bleach
  • Pool Shock, I wrote a post about this so read more here
  • Batteries (Try to get Low Discharge Rechargeables like ENELOOP)
  • Small battery Motion Detectors
  • Small Door/Window Alarms
  • Hand Warmers (can be used for sealing buckets of food)

There are also a multitude of other places you can go to at the last minute.

  • Bakeries.  Often they sell whole grain by the pound, the one near me sells hard red winter wheat (whole) for a Dollar a pound, often you have to bring your own buckets, but this is a good reason to have extras beyond what is filled in your long term storage preps.
  • Small military supply stores for a few extra pieces of gear
  • Gun Shops, pick over whats left if anything
  • Restaurant Supply stores are often overlooked, but they will have bags of Flour, Sugar, Salt, Buckets of butter, Honey, etc.
  • Pet Shops, they may not be the ideal rabbits, etc. but you can get a breeding pair to keep indoors and breed out some babies to eat later.
  • Dollar Stores.  They may have some canned goods and other trinkets of use left
  • Thrift Shops.  Often can have cheap extra clothing for different seasons
  • Supermarkets.  Now this was already covered but if they have a bakery section you might be able to finagle some buckets of oil, butter, flour, etc from the manager for a ‘side deal’
  • Automotive.  Going to the local Autozone or O’Reilly’s may be of some use to grab those extra belts for your engine, tires and other things that more often break.  Look at motor oil, Coolant and Fuel/Oil Filters as well.
  • Baby’s R Us/Boutique shops.  Same reason as getting diapers/baby stuff at the super market. Even if you don’t have a child it could be used as barter or charity depending on your situation/good will.  Also look at the more expensive re-usable cloth diapers, those could be gold for a parent, you can use them, wash them re-use them.
  • McDonald’s/Fast Food. You may be able to pay under the table to the manager to make off with some cooking oils and anything else of use like tubs of mayo, boxes of ketchup packets, etc.
  • Restaurants.  Same thing as fast food and Bakeries, you may be able to buy non-perishable buckets of oils, flour, butter, yeast, anything.
  • Book Stores.  Look for books on self sufficiency that you HAVE read and liked (to pass on) or on subjects you think you will need to learn NOW, but haven’t yet.

Do You have any other ideas? Something I have missed?  Comment Below!

Home made Mosquito Trap

mosquito_sick

Mosquito’s can be quite a nuisance, but can also bring diseases and in a collapse scenario could spell bad times for you and your family.

Mosquito’s are attracted to the CO2 that we breathe out which is how we get ‘found’!

Here’s what you need to make the trap

ITEMS NEEDED:

  • 1- 2 Liter SOda Bottle
  • Sharp knife
  • Black Paper
  • Tape
  • Candy thermometer
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 2 Cups Cool water
  • 1  tsp active dry yeast (found in bakery aisle)

HOW TO MAKE

  1. Take the Soda Bottle and cut the top off below where it starts to narrow to come up to the top.  flip it and place it neck down into the open soda container.
  2. Bring 1 Cup of water to a boil
  3. Dissolve Sugar into boiling water
  4. Once the Sugar is dissolved, remove the pot/pan from the stove and stir in two cups of cool water well.
  5. Check the Temperature of the syrup to make sure it isn’t above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.  If it is hotter let it cool further
  6. Add the Yeast, you dont need to mix it, just pour in
  7. Place the syrup in the bottom of the bottle
  8. Tape the Two Bottle pieces together.

The yeast will ferment the sugar (thats how you make liquor basically).  As it ferments it releases CO2 and attracts Mosquitos.  Put Black paper around the bottle to give the little guys the dark environment they love.  Place this in a dark humid place for 2 weeks to get the best results.  After those 2 weeks you will need to empty and rinse out the bottle and refill it with the fermenting goo.

Solar/Lunar Herbal Infusions

solar infusion medicinal tea

So Ive spoken about Herbal Infusions before when making tea, but here is a easy and natural method for doing this.

SOLAR INFUSION

Rose petals, fireweed, spruce tips, chamomile, dandelion, golden rod flowers and many more can be used to make a Solar Infusion.

A solar infusion is pretty simple using the energy and heat of the sun to infuse the beneficial nutrients and medicinal properties of the plant into the liquid for you to drink.

Step 1: Place fresh or dried herbs and water in a clear jar (open not closed, if insects are a problem use muslin cloth or similar to put over the top)

Step 2: Place jar in direct sunlight for several hours.  Allow the warm energy of the sun to gently heat the water, which releases fragrance and other attributes.

Step 3: After the few hours, strain our herbs or keep in and drink the Solar Infused Tea! Simple right?

The book spoke of using what you “feel is in tune” for the infusion but also offers a basic guide for those of us more nit picky.

1 tbl herbs to 1 up of water

4-6 tbl herbs to per 4 cups (1 liter) of water or 6 cup teapot.

For Fresh herbs, double amount given above

Lunar Infusion

This captures the reflective light given off the moon as well as the moons influence on water and ourselves from its gravitational pull to infuse the herbs.

Wild Sage, Chamomile, yarrow flower, labrador and other plants can be used.

Step 1: Place fresh or dried herbs (can see above for rough guestimations used for solar infusions) in a clear glass jar.

Step 2: Leave outside overnight (as stated above you can use muslin cloth to keep bugs out of it, if bugs are not an issue, keep open)

Step 3: DRINK!

Notes:

For both of these infusions they mention and i repeat some of the names of the different teas to use for each, for the most part ANY TEA can be made with both or either of these, so whatever you have in mind do it! See what works, if you want to add more, add less, add in addition, etc.!

Make a Flashlight Run 3.6x Longer

everready floating lantern

I got this from instructables.com see the link for the whole article at the end.  The author believes with the modification you can get 60 days of useable light at 6 hours of use a day!

ITEMS NEEDED

HOW TO BUILD

STEP 1

Flashlight modification run longer part 1

Unscrew the Black right that holds the light of the flashlight on the front.  Remove the light assembly (seen in photo) put in the Battery and put it back together, to test and make sure it works.

Then re-remove the light assembly and rind as shown in the picture above.  Unsolder on or the two red wires from the metal contact (what the arrow is pointing to in the photo)

STEP 2

Flashlight modification run longer part 2

The resistor chosen was 56 ohm which reduced the power to the LEDS to 50 milliamps (from 180 milliamps)However you dont have to use a 56 ohm, a 44 ohm (two in series) would reduce the power to 56 milliamps and 100 ohm would reduce it to 31 milliamps, it all depends on what you want to do.  The fewer the milliamps the less power, longer life, but also reduced light intensity.

Solder on end of the resistor to the metal contact on the light (bright metal on left) and the other end to the wire that you removed in Step 1. Re assemble the Light. You are don!

RESULTS

Flashlight modification run longer part 3

The Left  beam is from an un-modified verson while the one on the right shows the decreased light capacity in the modified version.

The original creator ran the light 24 hours a day and found that after 15 days (360 hours) there was still useable light, but noticeably dimmer than when the experiment started.  He estimates that if used 6 hours a day you could get 60 days out of this thing!

CONCLUSIONS

Its not a perfect fix, we all want LONGER LASTING and FULL POWER, however that isnt going to happen!  However I see this as a good use for around the house for daily chores, going to the bathroom, etc.  Have a Backup FULL POWER light for say checking for intruders or that bump in the night.  But 60 days of useable light is VERY GOOD!

Law enforcement and You: Know your rights

Traffic_Stop

It is amazing to me whenever I watch an episode of COPS how many times people incriminate themselves or basically serve their own arrest up to a police office on a silver platter.  Many of these cases are justified, and I think THEY should be in jail for the offense, however on occasion I see incidences where the person wasn’t exactly doing anything wrong, but they opened themselves up for scrutiny that led to an arrest.  They might have been innocent of the crime for which the police came, but they ended up in jail anyway.

Now I don’t want to get emails and comments from former/active Law Enforcement or other folks saying that you Cops need to be able to do their job etc, and that this sort of advice gets in the way of “getting the bad guys”.  Or to argue the idiotic concept of  “If your not doing anything wrong you shouldn’t worry”.

I respect your opinions and you service, however these protections are not there for good cops no just law has ever been put in place for the good folks in society, they are there because of the bad apples, those who seek to rule over others and infringe on their rights.  That’s why we have these protections against law enforcement, and yes that even includes the dirt bags.  It is liberty for all, not for a select few.  I also understand that many look at these things as “technicalities” that let dirt bags off, However if they fricken obeyed the laws themselves and followed them they wouldn’t have to worry about dirt bags getting off because you illegally searched their property, etc.

Below are some tips that will help you know your rights, as well as to keep any meeting with law enforcement, safe and smooth.

TRAFFIC STOP/IN VEHICLE

1) When you are being pulled over, find the closest safe point to do so, indicate you are doing so by slowing down and putting on your blinker.

2) Once you are pulled over you can reach over and grab the insurance and registration information as well as your wallet.  Put those on the dash and keep your hands visible on the steering wheel near the top of the steering wheel, not the bottom where they can be obscured and cause some concern for the Cop.  Turn off the radio and roll down your window enough to be able to hear him/her and pass through your information.

3) Once the officer reaches your window, If you are carrying a weapon, advise him that you are, where it is and what condition it is in. Such as…

“Officer I wish to inform you that I am carrying a pistol, It is holstered and on my hip (or wherever”

If you are a CCW holder then say..

“Officer I wish to inform you in accordance with __(STATE)___ Law,  that I am a concealed carry permit holder and am carrying a holstered revolver on my hip (or wherever)”

Most states even ones without CCW requirements require you to inform officers once they approach you that you are carrying a weapon.

Then inform them that you have your CCW permit, license, registration and insurance on the dash (or wherever it might be at the time).

3)  He will most likely tell you to keep you hands away from the area with the weapon(if you are carrying) and to hand him all the pertinent documents.

It is very important, especially if you are carrying that you don’t jerk to grab the insurance, etc out of the dash, etc.  Fast movements tend to make cops nervous, that’s why i advise to just have them out and on the dash before he gets there.  If you cant get it all together BEFORE he gets to rear of your vehicle just keep your hands on the wheel and wait for him to ask you for them, then SLOWLY with one hand reach for them.

If he asks you to roll down the window completely you don’t necessarily have to, but I’m not going to piss off a cop and be a stickler over something small like this.  There is no law on the books that you have to roll it all the way down, just that you have to hand over the necessary documents upon request.  I keep it open enough to hand them out, but like I said, I don’t make a issue out of it if they ask me too.  Yes it is your right, you make the call

4)  Once the officer takes your information he will go back to his car to run the info.  Keep still, don’t turn the car on, don’t blast the radio, etc.  Just sit there and wait.

5) If the Officer writes you a citation, etc.  Just take the ticket, your documents and ask “Am I free to go”  If the officer says “Yes”  then go. Don’t complain, yell or be a jackass.  Take the ticket and pay it or fight it in the courts, no cop has ever been persuaded from giving out a ticket by you yelling at them!

6) IF the officer hands you the ticket and starts asking you questions like “We have had reports of people running marijuana/oxycontin etc through this area, can i take a look in your car?”  Respond with

“I am exercising my right to remain silent and DO NOT consent to a search, am i free to go?”

If he continues to ask, continue to repeat.  Do not consent to a search, do not say anything else but this regardless of any “If you aren’t hiding anything what do you have to worry about? Just let me search your car quick and you can be on your way.”

Why should you?

BECAUSE YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO!

You never know what someone else that has been in your car had on them, your kids friends may be bad apples and had some drugs that fell out, a previous owner may have sewn up some drugs somewhere you never knew about, you may have a gas can that has a unapproved cap on it in the trunk, whatever.  Even if you have none of the above OR anything at all, the police have no right to search your car without a warrant or probably cause.  The reason so many of our freedoms are being infringed upon is because we collectively have acquiesced and allowed our rights to be usurped for the reason of “if you don’t have anything to hide,  you shouldn’t worry”

Courts have ruled that your vehicle does not have the same rights as the home, however only with probable cause or consent can they search your vehicle.  The 4th amendment guarantees your rights against unreasonable search and seizures.  If you do not consent to a search and the police do so anyways, without probably cause they cannot use any evidence found in that search against you.

7)  If from the time of the initial stop has been over 20 minutes and the Officer is still trying to get you to consent to a search, etc.  If the “I am exercising my right to remain silent and DO NOT consent to a search, am i free to go?” has not been heeded then advise the officer that “You are unreasonably delaying my freedom of travel, can you contact your supervisor please.”

8) If this has been an hour or so, then ask the officer “Officer may I contact my attorney”

This is a good reason to meet with (with free consultations) attorneys in your area, find one that seems decent and keep their card with number in your phone and wallet.

If you are unable to call for one reason or another (i.e. no cell phone) or the officer will not allow you to call your attorney then continue on to the next few statements/question.  If you are able to call an attorney DO NOT.  Keep silent, and wait.

9) “Officer what are the reasons you are detaining or arresting me?”  If he responds that you are not under arrest, then ask him “Am I free to go”

If he responds that you are under arrest, do not say anything, keep silent and call your attorney once you reach detention or as soon as you can.  No matter who questions you, etc. Keep silent until your attorney arrives.  If you cannot afford one, request a public defender and refuse to talk until you have spoken to one.

10) If he still will not let you leave, or say plainly that you have been detained or arrested then ask them

“Officer do you have any probable cause or reasonable suspicion that i have or am going to commit a criminal offense?”

If he answers no, then ask”Am i free to go?” if he says no ask  ”Is there anything in plain view that gives you reason to believe i have or am about to commit a criminal offense?”  If he answers no, ask again “Am i Free to go?”

11)  If he still says no, ask him “Are there any new statutes, laws or legal doctrine that I may not be aware of that gives you CAUSE to detain me?”  If he answers No, then ask again “Am i free to go”

By now you should have established that you know your rights.  Don’t be the guy that all he does is be asked a question and then scream “I KNOW MY RIGHTS!”  Yes you do, but anyone can say that.

If the officer still wont let you leave, then continue to ask If you are free to go, he will either let you go or arrest you for whatever reason.  Then just call your attorney and keep silent, keep silent, keep silent.

If at any time during this conversation he/she becomes bothered and rips you out of the car, do not resist, put your arms up, say ‘I am not resisting, I do not consent to a search”

THROUGHOUT THE CONVERSATION DO NOT RAISE YOUR VOICE, even if you are being pulled from a vehicle be calm and collected.

If the officer does pull you out, pat you down and start to search your vehicle or say that they are calling K9, etc to conduct  a search say this.

“I do not consent to a search, this search is noncensentual and unconstitutional, you have stated you have no probably cause, suspicion and have seen nothing in plain view to give you cause to believe i have or will commit a criminal act.  This is an illegal search and all evidence will be inadmissible”

There are other legal concepts you can throw in there, but the average officer will have no idea what you are talking about most likely.

Why say all this? Because preceding this you have asked all the questions to remove any reason as to WHY they would have a right to search you and your vehicle.  This will provide immense protection in court.

For brevities sake you might just ask parts 10 and 11 all at once after they have responded you are not under arrest

“Officer do you have probable cause, reasonable suspicion, or have seen anything in plain view that might give you cause to believe i have or will commit a criminal act? Are there any new legal statues or doctrine that give you cause to detain me?”  This way you can cover all your bases at once.

Now will saying all of this still mean you wont go to jail? not necessarily there are still judges out there that side with LE on everything short of execution.  However in the long haul this may help in any appeals process.

However 9 times out of 10 you will be be “free to go” once you start asking the right questions.

By asking these questions you are keeping him on the defensive having to prove WHY you are still there instead of not answering the questions he is asking.

Once again follow the ABC’s (ALWAYS BE COOL) Never yell, threaten, jump out of the car, etc.  This is a sure way to get your ass thrown in jail, and you will set yourself up for a much better defense if you are seen as the one being calm and the officer freaking out, vs you yelling and screaming about your rights and the Gestapo.  In the end the officer will do whatever he wants to do, constitutional or not, if he drags you out, just take it, stay calm, and wait to talk to your attorney.  YOU WILL NEVER WIN by being a machismo a-hole and fighting back, etc.  You wont always win by being calm, but you will have a 100% better chance by doing so.

A few more caveats.

  • If you Unlock the car at the request of the officer or hand him your keys this is the same as “consenting” to a search, don’t do it.  If police TELL you to, you have the same right to refuse “I do not consent to any searches.”
  • You cannot be held while waiting for Drug Dogs.  If dogs are already present they are allowed to walk the dog AROUND the vehicle.  If the dog smells something they have probable cause for a search.  However you cannot be held indefinitely until dogs arrive.  If they cannot get dogs by the time it take to run your plates/info, it is not in the right.  If they make you wait continue to say “I do not consent to a search” Repeat this once they arrive.
  • A Passenger in a vehicle cannot be held responsible for a drivers conduct, and are generally free to leave unless police become “suspicious”  Because evidence needed to detain passengers is minimal you MUST REMEMBER TO REFUSE SEARCH REQUESTS AND DO NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS!!!!  Why? because if you say you are on your way to buffalo and the driver says you are going to Amherst (even though its a suburb of buffalo) even a simple difference in a story can give probably cause to search your vehicle.  Just keep your mouth shut.

IN THE HOME

Non-Hostile encounter

The police may come to your door for whatever reason, whether to question you about something/someone, or a “community outreach” visit, etc.

1) When they knock at the door, You do not have to open the door.  You can respond, ask them what they want, but inform them  you are not opening the door.

You can also come out to meet them, but shut the door behind you, this removes any “plain view” probably cause.

2) If they ask to come in or for you to open the door, inform them you are not legally obligated to do so without a warrant.  If they have one, ask to see it.  Then inspect it to make sure it has the proper name, address, etc.  If even 1 number or letter is off they do not have the right to come in.

The only exceptions to this are if they hear a cry for help, or can see in the window, etc. and in plain view see criminal activity in progress or evidence of past criminal activity.

Example:  You have needles scattered around, or bloody rags, smell of marijuana.  You get the idea.

However even with Probably Cause the Supreme Court has ruled that the home has the MAXIMUM protection and they SHOULD have to get a search warrant even with probably cause.  However if they force their way in, just say “I do not consent to a search of my home or person, this is a warrant less search”  keep repeating it, ask to call your attorney.  Say nothing else.

There are some caveats to the protection you have in your home.

Rentals

Now rentals have less protection due to the fact that you do not own the property.  If you live in a rental and the police arrive and ask to come in you can refuse as stated above.  The difference being if the landlord or whoever it is that is named on the deed can consent to a search.  If you have a wife, roommate they can also consent to a search of your property, however this can be nullified if you say you do not consent to a search, however if they come and you are not there, you are not able to exercise this right.  Whoever owns the property or is on a lease agreement can consent to a search so make sure you let those people know that they should NOT consent to a search, etc.  Another way to get around this if your roommate say consents to a search but your room/area is locked, since it has been ruled that what is “off limits” to your roommate will also be “off limits” to a police search if you are not there.

HOSTILE ENCOUNTER

If your door is busted down and you hear “Police !(or Sherriff’s department, or any other LE org) we have a search warrant”  Just  stay still and put your hands up.  You cant really do anything at that moment, so just keep your mouth shut.  You can ask to see the search warrant, etc. but mostly just keep quiet, stay calm and ask for a lawyer. Do not say anything, Do not say anything, Do not say anything.  You will never be in a worse situation because “you didn’t talk”.  Wait until your lawyer arrives then talk to him/her and figure out the best course of action.

Police HAVE to announce that they are Police and have a search warrant, this is so homeowners do not shoot them or come out with a gun and get shot.  However this isn’t always the case, there are tons of cases of “No knock” warrants being served to the wrong house, a citizen hearing their door being busted open and then coming out to defend themselves and getting shot.  Be very careful to make sure that if you hear a crash of a door being busted in that it is NOT police if you are grabbing your gun.

On Foot/In Public

The same advice as stated above applies in these situations as well.

  • If a police Officer approaches you and asks you to stop, you are required to stop, if you do not you can be arrested.
  • However you are not required to tell the police officer anything or answer their questions, you are within your rights to remain silent
  • During the course of this conversation whether you choose to answer the questions or not, ask “Am I free to go?”  Just like a traffic stop, continue to ask this.
  • You should give your name and address if asked by the Officer, However you are not required to do so unless the police have reasonable suspicion that you have been involved in criminal activity.  You can ask “Officer do you have Reasonable Suspicion that I have been involved in Criminal Activity?”  You can Also mention that The Supreme Court upheld in Hiibel v. Sixth Judicial Court of Nevada Police that state law can require me to reveal my identity if you have reasonable suspicion that I am involved in criminal activity.  This means that they cant just stop you to ask you who you are “just because” only IF they have reasonable suspicion, continue to ask that question as well as “Am I Free to go”
  • One way to tell if they have reasonable suspicion is by asking “Officer are you detaining me or Am i Free to go?”  If the police have reasonable suspicion then they CAN detain you, thus if they are detaining you they can compel you to identify themselves.  If they say “No” to your question of being detained, then tell them if they don’t have reasonable suspicion then i am not required to identify myself, continue to ask “Am i Free to go”
  • In the World of State Issued ID’s, if they ask you for your ID and you are not in a vehicle or Flying you are not required to carry one.  So if you are just walking down the street and they ask for you ID, you can tell them that you are not required to carry one since you are not operating a motor vehicle, then continue with the questions about reasonable suspicion, Am i free to go? etc.
  • If the Police SAY you are detained you are required to identify yourself, and it is up to you to do so as you can be held accountable for NOT.  And if you are a victim of mistaken identity this could be cleared up quick.  However State laws differ, say in California, if you are on parole, revealing your identity will identify you as a parolee and open to a search.  The choice is up to you.
  • Reasonable suspicion is a very grey area, and Police Make mistakes, if their “reasonable suspicion” is faulty then their decision to detain you as well as search and identify you is inadmissible in a court.  Contact an Attorney afterwords for your legal options.

Final Notes

  • Police are NOT required to tell you the truth, In Frazier v. Cupp, 394 U.S. 731, 739 (1969), It was ruled that the ONLY place Police are required to tell the truth is in the courtroom, they can lie and bend the truth to obtain a confession at any time.  In Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436 the Police are ONLY required to advise you of your rights IF you are in custody and being interrogated about the offense for which you are being confined. If you have been arrested don’t say anything, keep silent, and ask to call an attorney once you have been brought to the police station.  If the police put you in interrogation it is often not because they have an open and shut case on you, but they want more information.  Don’t believe them when they say “we just want your side of the story”, etc.  You can often incriminate yourself without knowing it.  An example is say an 18 year old with a 15 year old girlfriend, they tell him they have evidence he raped her, etc. and want “His side of the story” so he tells them NO there was no rape, it was consensual, etc.  He has now just confessed to STATUTORY RAPE, a lesser offense but still an offense.
  • re D.A.S., 391 A.2d 255, (D.C. App. 1978) the Police pretended to match a suspects fingerprints to ones found on a victims checkbook, when in fact they had not.  The Suspect then confessed to the robbery and the Court upheld that the Fabrication of evidence did not invalidate the confession.  The evidence which was fake couldn’t be used in a court of course, however if the police are trying to get you to confess to a crime IT IS NEVER IN YOUR INTEREST TO DO SO.  Once again stay silent, lawyer up. Don’t sign anything other than the “Inventory” of your personal belongings after you are booked.
  • YOU ARE ALLOWED TO RECORD POLICE.  Now many cops do not like this, so this does not mean you wont have an altercation or an issue with them.  But the First Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld that it is a “constitutionally protected right to videotape police carrying out their duties in public.”  This has stipulations.

1) California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Washington require that all parties consent to be recorded if you are recording anything on any tape.  However there is a “expectation of privacy provision” that does not apply to on-duty police officers or anyone in “Public”, so if you are recording police from your property or even on a public street while they are conducting Official Business whether its a drug bust or a traffic stop, you are allowed to do so.  Only Massachusetts and Illinois do not have this provision.  When you are recording however you are NOT allowed to interfere with Officers doing their job, this means you can walk into the house they are busting and get in the middle of it all, or get up in their face during a traffic stop, keep your distance, don’t do anything that could be CONSTRUED as interfering and you are in the right legally.

2) In Massachusetts the only conviction upheld in any state for recording police was only done so because the person SECRETLY recorded the encounter with police.  This is the law in most states however.  You are not allowed to secretly record a interaction of which you are not party to, this means if you see the cops beating someone up if you go out with a camcorder in hand you are ok, but if its a hidden button camera, etc and you DON’T make them aware of the fact they are being recorded means you can be charged.  In most states. Fortunately most judges are rejecting these laws when it refers to your own arrest, etc.  But if you want to be 100% in the right, don’t do it in secret, let them know right off the bat they are being recorded.

3) If Police approach you because you are recording them, don’t be an ass saying “I’m doing this so you don’t beat someone” or “I want evidence of you Gestapo assholes!”  Be calm and collected, you will only HURT your chances for a positive outcome if the worst happens by being a jerk, especially if you were one first.  Say Something like “Officer I am not interfering, I am exercising my first amendment rights upheld by state and federal courts, you are being documented and the recording is being stored off site.”  If they ask “who do you work for, what news agency?”  If you run a blog, etc. You can tell them that however there is no legal basis for it being necessary to be an accredited journalist to record police.  If they ask for you ID, follow the same rules as state above in the “On the Street” Section.

4) If they say “You are not allowed to record police, stop recording its against the law.”  This is where you will have to make your own decision.  Now if this is just for fun, etc and their is no misconduct or belief their will be, it is up to, since Telling Cops what the law is will never make a situation better, however in a tense situation you may want to be on the up and up of that States Laws which you can find here.  You can advise the officer that recording (in most states) only requires the consent of one of the parties and that you are not interfering with his work, if you live in one of the 12 “all party” states you can also advise him that you are familiar with the law and as long as you are not interfering protections against being recorded do not extend to on duty police officers.

5) Don’t share the video with police, if you really want to do this properly, have a device that can upload directly to YouTube, many cameras nowadays offer wifi compatibility that can offer instantaneous upload to YouTube or offline storage site such as this Samsung Galaxy, Samsung WB150f, or Canon 320HS all of which run between $120-$140 .    There is also an APP called TapIn for Ipad/Iphone that automatically uploads and streams your video rendering the police unable to take your phone/camera and deleting the information. However you must be aware that if the area you are recording in DOES NOT have WiFi or good 3g/4g service the offsite uploading may not work.   If you are recording with an IPhone or other smart phone most of them all have some sort of “LOCK” feature, so if you don’t have all the cool apps or auto-uploads at least have the phone be able to lock, so at least you can slow down the police or stop them from destroying the information.

The QIK app allows you to load video automatically up to YouTube or off site storage, on IPhone and Android Phones it uploads once the phone is turned off, so if you are recording and a cop comes running up to you you can quickly “lock” the phone and it uploads off site and now it is pass code protected and will be still be available even if the phone is destroyed or confiscated.  The Bambuster app allows for your phone to keep recording even if it is “turned off” this can allow you to pretend to stop recording but still be doing so.  This however is in a more dangerous legal territory, as you could be convicted of “secretly recording” because you said or made it seem that you were no longer doing so.  This goes without saying but DO NOT give out your phone pass code if the cop takes the phone.

A Massachusetts woman filmed a cop beating a motorist with a flashlight, she had wiretapping charges filed against her after she posted the video on the Internet, the charges were dropped.  Just recently the case of a Cop body slamming a bicyclist in NYC resulted in the Cop being fired and a lawsuit against the city, the video was posted anonymously and went viral.  If you automatically upload to a site like YouTube keep all incoming videos default set at “private” this way it is not posted right away, this is so you can consult an attorney first as police have been known to raid the homes of people you post their “police going ape****” videos to YouTube.

There are also after market Dash cams available on the Internet that you can put in your vehicle whether it is front or back or both or wherever.  However you must notify the officer the first chance you have, when he approaches your vehicle.

6) Be ready to be arrested, It is a very real possibility, so if you are “Told” you stop recording you can make that determination yourself, you can say “Yes officer but i am doing so under protest.” Or continue to record BUT be ready to be put in handcuffs, keep recording and try to keep the camera from being destroyed.  If you can have someone else in the house (if you are on your property) record this just in case the cop destroys the camera and you didn’t upload it off site.

7) Do not hold your camera like a gun or in a aggressive manner, hold it close to your body so that you can keep eye contact and have a conversation, practice and have it angled up to catch both peoples faces, have good control of the camera before an officer approaches you, don’t go wildly reaching for it, you could get shot because the officer “thought” you had a gun.

8) If you are arrested do not give up your pass code (if applicable) stay silent and ask for an attorney, don’t yell out about your rights, etc.  Contact an attorney and the ACLU, and don’t upload the video beforehand.  If you have the video off site or whatever is the case you can use it later for a court case, their is no hurry.

  • The main thing is be calm, collected, KNOW your rights, but show you know them by asking those questions, and not just a “I know my rights man!”.

Worm Bins

My Family has used Red Worm Bins for decades now, and they are an easy year round option for Organic Fertilizer.

You can make your own Worm Bins from Rubbermaid Containers as shown in these plans here.

However I do like the Worm Factory Brand Worm Bins, as they are easily stackable and have that spigot at the bottom, which makes it easier to get the juice out! The three stack option shown is around $80.

Basically all you do is throw in your kitchen waste, veggies, coffee grinds, anything non-meat that is organic for the most part (However onions and Citrus is not their favorite and will only be eaten once everything else is gone).  You can also throw In shredded paper, it all breaks down.

You then drain the juice into jugs (we use milk/orange juice jugs) and you often use it as a folio spray (onto the leaves) in a 20:1 ratio with water.  The “Castings” that is the dark earth left behind is a great compost to use for potting plants or adding to plant beds.  The Castings contain worm eggs and will hatch in your gardens and double in population every 40 days, this is safe and good for your gardens.

The great thing is if you have this in a basement or garage that stays relatively warm all year you can run this system all year, during the winter storing up the castings and juice to use during the planting season!

Insulating Windows Cheaply

This is a pretty ingenious thing i found at builditsolar.com

In many modern homes to cut down on energy consumption 2-3 pan windows are used to use the trapped air as the main insulation in the windows.  As you know just like in clothing the trapped air is what holds heat and keeps you warm, well bubble wrap does the same pretty well.

What the guy at builditsolar.com does is put bubble wrap up on the windows of the unused rooms in the house, bathroom, guest rooms, etc.  They pull it down when guests get there and put it back up when they leave.

The bubble wrap of course obscures vision but it still lets a lot of the light through, so even in some rooms that you do use, you can put this up and still have a decent amount of natural light come in during the day.

HOW TO

  • Cut the Bubble wrap to the size of the window
  • Spray a light coat of water on the window (use a old cleaned spray bottle filled with water)
  • Put the Bubble wrap on when the window is still wet and press it into place, Bubble side towards glass
  • To remove just grab a corner and pull it off.

Notes:

  • If you have issues with pulling it off next time add a bit of Glycerin to the water, it doesn’t leave stains on the windows
  • A few small pieces of double sided tape can help to stick to “pain” windows
  • Install in Fall, Remove in Spring
  • When you take the Bubble wrap down put a number on a corner of it and write down what window the number corresponds to.  The following year it wont be a puzzle you are trying to put together.
  • Save the bubble wrap from packages you get
  • Check places that sell large items (get it for free)
  • Check for Wholesale packing supply chains in your area
  • Buy it online

To me this a great, cheap, DIY alternative to expensive window insulation.  True it looks ugly but if there’s a SHTF scenario you wont care in the winter months.  I would personally cut sizes for this for the whole home and store it away with enough to make a second set, even if you have triple pane glass.  Why? because even with the best the market can offer this will still add another layer, and warm up your house even further.

Teotwawki: Funerals and Care of Bodies

old photo funeral procession

Ok so this is sort of a morbid subject, but one that needs to be addressed, since as preppers we need to be prepared for a variety of scenarios.

In a truly dire situation, we may not have the luxury of a mortuary or funeral home, or we may just decide we don’t want to deal with it and wish to bury our loved ones or others as we see fit.

Normal/Semi-Normal Times

First thing that needs to be addressed is the legal concerns, if government is still active and enforcing laws you will need to do a few things first.

  • Notify the Police who will conduct a investigation into cause of death.  Especially if this is a stranger or friend you don’t want to have suspicion cast your way or be criminally liable years later.
  • Contact Local Board of Health or Zoning/Planning Commissions to ensure that you can do this.   You may have to submit a request/petition, and will probably zone a piece of your property as a “cemetary” as well as have a restriction on the deed to your home/property so that future owners would be aware of its presence.  You may even have to wait for a City/Town Council to approve, as is seen in the case of James Davis of Alabama who is currently in a legal battle as the County Health Department found no issues with the burial site, but the City Council rejected it due to various issues.
  • Conneticut, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska and New York as of January 2011 require a funeral director to “Handle the remains during the process”, once the funeral directors legal involvement is complete you CAN bury that person on your property legally (minding the other things mentioned above).  All other 44 States do not require this.
  • You can consult what is called a “Death Midwife” who are educated in local laws and legal necessities and can be a great help to maneuvering the legal eagle stuff, their fees can range from a couple hundred bucks to a couple thousand, still below the standard funeral cost.

Collapse/TEOTWAWKI

If you are in a survival situation/Collapse scenario then you will not be able to do this.  However If I were you I would do the following to “cover your ass”

  • If possible take photos of the body and injuries (if present), whether digital or disposable.  File those away, you never know what the future might bring
  • Get signatures of witnesses who can testify to the cause of death.  If it was a defensive shooting this is of the utmost importance, You dont want to be tried for Murder 10 years later, while this might not be a get out of jail free card, it cant hurt.
  • If its a stranger or friend, keep valuables stored away to give to relatives if you ever come into contact with them.

There are alot of old wives tales associated with dead bodies.  The Mortuary industry likes to perpetuate this because it is good for business, namely that dead bodies are carriers of disease and only trained professionals can deal with them.

This is not true, no matter what your views are on the uniqueness of man and his/her place in this world, a human dead body is as little danger as a dead deer or wild board, they both live and when they die they decay.  There are a few exceptions to this however.  If the person died from an infectious disease, pandemic, etc. then you MUST TAKE THE UTMOST CARE in the disposal and internment of the body.  Wear proper protective gear and avoid contact with any bodily fluid.  If the cause of death is undetermined its always best to be on the safe side, and even if you know death was not from a infectious disease you should always err on the side of caution.  That being said, a dead human body is not a massive biohazard 99% of the time. FYI also, HIV can live up to 16 days under refrigeration so be wary of that as well.

Decay

A body, any body goes through stages of putrefaction, that is decay, from Fresh to Bloat to Active Decay, Advanced decay and final Dry/Skeletal.

The warmer the environment the more time is of the essence to intern the body properly, colder climates will allow you more time as the process will be slowed due to the colds inhibiting factor on decomposing bacteria in our bodies.

Within 3-6 hours after death, muscular tissues become rigid and will be unable to relax, this is known as rigor mortis, that is once this sets in if the body is not in the position you want it to be, it wont be able to, this is why putting them in the casket (if it is to be used) is important very quickly, or at least keeping the body in the classic funeral position (straight arms at sides).   After about 36-72 hours (once again climate dependent) the body WILL lose rigor mortis, however during this time the body is beginning to break down, insects will be attracted and a odor will be emitted.

There is a reason many religions require burial within 12-24 hours, regardless of the theological specific implications it also serves a practical purpose.  I did say that bodies are not inherently biohazards, however anything that is decomposing can become a health risk as it begins to rot.

Internment

If you are putting the individual in a casket here is  PDF on how to build  a Simple Casket, or for a more traditional coffin look, this site has decent info on how to DIY build it yourself. You also have the option of just laying the body in the hole or wrapping it in bedsheets/ linens etc. Its all a matter of preference as coffins do not serve and real practical purpose.

There is no set depth for burial, the term “six feet under” is a colloquial saying and not a letter of law or natural requirement, and it all depends on your local situation.  For areas in low lying swamp like Louisiana going that deep could dump you into the water table!

I would say that around 3 feet deep would be sufficient to keep scavenging animals from digging it up, just make sure the hole is long and wide enough to fit the body or the casket/body.

You will want to make the burial site far away from the home and water sources for the house.  The body could leak into the groundwater possible and contaminate your well and drinking water if to close to the home, but this all depends on your local conditions.  The best way to make sure is to determine the natural slope of the land around your home, even if it is minute.  Place the burial site on the side that slopes away from the home and well, this way IF the groundwater was to be contaminated, it would be carried away from your home and not towards your well.

You can consult a USDA paper on Carcass Disposal, more geared towards pandemic disease such as Mad Cow and how to dispose of large amounts of bodies, but still could be of Some use, particularly if you own livestock.

Once the body is in the hole it is up to you what kind, if any funeral services you want to conduct.  However regardless of your beliefs or lack thereof it may be a kindness to be aware of different traditions to help honor that individual as they lived their life.

Below are links to burial practices for various faiths and belief systems, you should download this article and those practices and put it in a binder somewhere, you never know what friendships may be struck in a dire scenario and they may have different practices than your own, this way you can honor the beliefs they held in remembrance of that person.

Eggs as a Bandage: Prepper First Aid

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

“Ancient Chinese Medicine huh?”  Sorry couldn’t help but put that old one in given the context of the article!

Okay so 4 Taiwanese doctors presented this study at the 3rd Asian-Pacific Burns Conference in Taipei, Taiwan.  In the study they put Egg membranes head to head with the common burn/skin graft wound care products currently used on the market, what they found was, surprisingly that the lowly egg membrane actually worked better in most cases!

They measured the different products in two categories, Reepithelialization (healing) and COMPLETE pain relief

Biobrane= Healing in 14 days, pain relief in 6

B.G.C = Healing in 14.5 days, pain relief in 7

Surgilon = Healing in 16 days , pain relief in 10

Egg Membrane = Healing in 11.6 days, pain relief in 7.3

Overall the Egg won out, it healed the wound in 2.4 or more days faster than the others and was only a day plus later for complete pain relief.  So what does this mean for preppers?

Well it doesn’t mean throw away your first aid kit and don’t buy bandages and gauze!  It means you now have a proven technique to use for burn treatments and has scientific backing to its validity.

However there are a few concerns that come along with this realization…In the study the egg membranes were irradiated with gamma radiation to kill any bacteria that could be in them.  Salmonella is a MAJOR concern when dealing with chickens, and you could potentially do more damage to the patient by using unsafe, or infected egg membranes.  To stop Salmonella from being present in your flock a few things can be done.

  • If you so choose you can vaccinate your chickens against salmonella, this has been proven to work pretty well, however this is something you will have to figure out yourself, the world of vaccination is a very…..problematic one.
  • Keep you chickens coops clean, the area they live in clean and this will help stop the spread of diseases.
  • Limit the contact of your chickens to other people/visitors and especially other birds such as pigeons, ducks, etc.
  • Quarantine a sick chicken IMMEDIATELY, this can help stop the spread of disease to the rest of your flock
  • Rodent Control, Salmonella is usually spread by visitors, and that includes rodents, so rodent proof the area, keep animals and traps on site that kill them, and keep the chickens feed in sealed containers, if the chickens feed outside, bring the food in at night to keep rodents from flocking to the area.
  • Salmonella is pretty resilient and can live a long life, so even trucks or bottoms of boots can carry the bacteria to new places, namely your coop!
  • Collect eggs often and store immediately and keep the nesting areas clean and fresh.

Personally I would only use this if no other option is available, However this is better than having NO option.

For this to be used we are talking major burn wounds, not a small burn on a finger that could be treated with aloe (side note, get aloe plants in your house now! they are easy to take care of and thrive pretty decently indoors!) This is for major burn wounds that would normally need hospital attention.

As with all major burn wounds, infection is the biggest enemy, so keeping the area where the person is recovering clean is paramount, as well as the person treating them, you need to STAY CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! I cant reiterate that enough.  Use alcohol to keep your hands and instruments clean, wash bedsheets in boiling water daily as well as any clothes that person wears.  Then i would flush the wound with sterile water, Do not use alcohol on a burn wound, or hydrogen peroxide they inhibit new tissue growth.

Honey has also been used on burn sites with some effectiveness, and overall wound care as well.  The issue with honey for medical use is that it can contain botulism, which is fine for eating unless its an infant, but can be dangerous if put on an open wound.  There are medical honey products out on the market, and have been irradiated to kill bacteria that could cause issues, regular honey is better than nothing in a pinch, but you should still be aware of the dangers.  I am not a doctor nor a medical professional, so this is all at your own risk of course.

The original article i read about this on was on lifehacker.com, which has some neat stuff

The original article of the study can be found here on the National Institute of Health website, or you can just download it by clicking the link  Taiwan Egg membrane burn study
